Stella Roberts Obituary

Stella Mae Roberts, a beloved mother, doting grandmother, darling sister, and

faithful friend to many, returned to the Lord on April 10, 2024, at the age of 83. Stella passed away peacefully in San Diego, California.

Born on August 4, 1940, Stella was the fourth of six children of the late Arthur Baldwin and Ethel Rogers. Stella spent her childhood years living in the Oklahoma countryside. She moved to Oklahoma City during her teen years, where she graduated from Douglas High School, class of 1957.

Though Oklahoma and her family there served as the foundation that formed her, Stella was grateful to call San Diego home. After nearly 60 years of enjoying the

California coast, she still marveled at the weather and beautiful landscape.

In San Diego, she met her husband, John, whom she married in 1966. This is where Stella and John raised their family of four children: Reginald, Kimberly, Philemon, and Ethel.

A significant part of Stella's professional career was spent working for the County of San Diego as a registered nurse. She earned her nursing degree from Langston

University. She was a member of the San Diego Black Nurses Association, where she happily devoted her time and energy to supporting many causes within the

community. Nursing was not just a job for Stella, but also her passion.

In addition to her family and work, her strong faith in God was a part of Stella's identity. She was a College Avenue Baptist Church member for over 30 years and rarely missed a Sunday service.  Stella was always willing to give a helping hand.  She was known for driving fellow church members and friends around town, earning her car the moniker “The Glory Wagon.”

There was never a day when Stella did not give thanks to the Lord, and she never failed to sing His praises. She was secure in her heart and mind that when her time came, her soul already had reservations in God's Holy Kingdom. As she put it, “She was going on to glory.”

Stella was preceded in death by her husband, John; her daughter, Kimberly

Underwood; her granddaughter, Stella Rose; her brothers, David & Ernest Wray

 and George Baldwin; and her sister, Bettye Harris. Stella is survived by her sons

Reginald Baldwin, Oklahoma City, OK, and Philemon Roberts, San Diego, CA;

daughter, Ethel Roberts, San Diego, CA; 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Wilma Brannon, Oklahoma City, OK; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Stella will be remembered as someone hardworking, helpful to those in need, quick with a witty and funny word, and abundant with joy and happiness. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her.
